Transformative Responsibility
Working Draft2026
Abstract
This paper argues that transformative experience reveals a deep form of moral luck that challenges conventional accounts of moral responsibility while also providing the resources to reconstruct them. Drawing on L. A. Paul's account of transformative choice together with the moral luck debates of Nagel, Williams, Nussbaum, and Wolf, I argue that responsibility survives profound personal change not through perfect rational foresight but through an ongoing process of self-formation.
